Activities at Furneaux

Enjoy the water and surrounding native New Zealand bush

Furneaux Lodge is perfectly placed to take advantage of the natural playground that is the Marlborough Sounds.

At Furneaux Lodge

Kayaks and stand up paddle boards
Our staff will teach you the necessary skills you need to explore beautiful Endeavour Inlet. Please always wear a lifejacket. Be sure to keep an eye out for seals, stingrays in the shallows, little blue penguins, king shags, a passing pod of dolphins or, occasionally, orca.
Glow worms
Discover the magical sight of glow worms lighting up the bush at night. Simply head out the lodge’s main gates and head onto the Queen Charlotte Track, and see these tiny creatures glow all around you.

Rimu Tree walk
10 minutes
Visit the 1000-year-old rimu tree near Furneaux Lodge. From the lodge gates, turn right and look for the sign directing you to the tree.

Talk to us about a range of scheduled and bespoke cruises available to explore the stunning Marlborough Sounds:

  • Dolphin and wildlife cruise. The Marlborough Sounds is often visited by dolphins and sometimes even whales and orca. We can organise a tour to see, or swim with, dolphins and discover the many birds, seals and stingrays that also live here.
  • Bird cruise. Take a cruise to beautiful Motuara Island in Queen Charlotte Sound to see some of New Zealand’s rarest bird species. We can organise a tour similar to the Eco Cruise
  • Seafood cruise. Discover, learn about and taste the freshest seafood, including King salmon and Greenshell Mussels straight from the source, on a seafood cruise through Queen Charlotte Sound.
  • History cruise. Learn of the Maori people who settled here hundreds of years ago and hear some of their many myths and legends. See Captain James Cook’s favoured anchorage at Meretoto/Ship Cove.
  • Charter Cruise. Create a bespoke Marlborough Sounds experience - charter a vessel and explore the lesser-known corners of Queen Charlotte Sound.

Scuba Diving
Furneaux Lodge’s location in sheltered Marlborough Sounds waters, near the fascinating wreck of the sunken Russian liner Mikhail Lermontov in Port Gore and also marine reserves, makes this an excellent base for divers.
